Reka.Koncz, (In) Return 2018
Annamaria Reka.Koncz is the grower and winemaker here. She farms organically on just about 3 ha of land, with some old vines, their age ranging from 40 to 60 years old.
From eastern Hungary, bordering with Ukraine, the village Barabas where her vineyards are have similar climate to Bukk and Tokaj. The soils here are really unique with sub soils being a complex mix of volcanic rocks, ashy lava formed into perlite on being cooled down with top soil comprising loamy loess. The result is, wines that have fullness and supple fruit to it as well as laced with a salty, mineral backbone.
Annamaria’s whites/skinsy wines are field blends based on rare Kiralyleanka, Harslevelu, Furmint and Riesling, Yellow Muscat and Kekfrankos in red.
With very small, limited quantities, these are worth snapping up when you see them.
A blend of Kiralyleanka and Riesling – this has a full, expressive nose, the beautiful aromatics of Riesling floral, ripe lemons, exoticism shine through. The Kiralyleanka’s spicy, fleshy, and weighty texture balances and gives a superb backbone to this wine. With longer skin contact on this wine, you will find good grip on the palate but with a vibrancy and lingering finish. Delish!
