Vintage 2011 Morgadio da Calçada Port
The year of 2011 was declared universally a vintage year by all major port houses in Douro and by the institute IVDP, which rated the year 10/10 for the quality.
Dirk Niepoort “might be the best year of all time”
Jancis Robinson “I have never been as excited by the launch of vintage ports. The quality is truly outstanding”
Victoria Moore (The Telegraph) “If you are already a port fan my advice is: PILE IN. If you ever thought that one day you will buy some to shove under the stairs and bring out in a decade or 2, NOW IS THE TIME”
The Vintages prepared by Niepoort are always bottled after a short maturation period of 2 years in port barrels. The Morgadio da Calçada Vintage reflects the beauty of the Douro region, as well as the region’s austerity and uniqueness. This vintage is a potent and complex wine, almost impenetrable when newly produced, but with a long maturation life in the bottle. Tasting a vintage is always a unique and special moment.
VINIFICATION: 2011 was a year of relatively low rainfall during the winter and surprising flowering in March, earlier than usual. The extreme heat appeared suddenly in June, causing some grape bunches to burn, especially in early growing varieties such as Tinta Barroca. Although July and August were cooler months with some rainfall, temperatures were high in September and the harvest had to be speeded up to prevent over-ripe grapes. The Morgadio da Calçada Vintage 2011 was entirely pressed by foot in stone troughs. We included 100% stems in the process, as usual in a vintage of this quality. It aged for two years in large port vats and casks.
TASTING NOTES: The Vintage Morgadio da Calçada 2011 has a very deep dark red colour. Aromas of wild berries and dark fruits are evident and it has a velvety texture on the palate, contrasting wonderfully with a finish in which the tannins are delightfully rustic. The almost perfect acidity of the 2011 harvest, coupled with great concentration, make this 2011 vintage a large and impressive wine that will gain much from time spent in the bottle.
FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Perfect with “Queijo da Serra”, a Stilton or other blue cheeses. Egg based desserts with “Pão de Ló” (Portuguese sponge based cake).
